Profile of Guangdong Vocational College of Mechanical and Electrical Technology

 
   As a full-time institution of higher learning, Guangdong Vocational College of Mechanical and Electrical Technology is under the direct jurisdiction of Guangdong Provincial Education Department. Endowed with convenient traffic and pleasant surroundings, its main campus lies in Tonghe Sub-district at the foot of Baiyun Mountain in downtown Guangzhou.
   The college dates back to the autumn of 1963 when “Guangdong Provincial Agricultural & Mechanical Technical School” was established by Guangdong Provincial Agriculture Department, with capital investment from the State Agriculture Ministry and the then Guangdong Provincial Labor Bureau. Unfortunately, the school was paralyzed by the “Great Cultural Revolution” in 1966. It was not until 1974 when the school resumed operation upon the approval from the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee. In 1994, upon the approval from the Guangdong Provincial Government, it was renamed “Guangdong Provincial Mechanical & Electrical School”, which started to offer five-year higher vocational programs in 1997, as one of the first ten technical secondary schools with such practice in Guangdong. Under the concerted efforts of all faculty and staff members and students, it was officially upgraded into “Guangdong Vocational College of Mechanical and Electrical Technology” in May, 2001.
   With a floor space up to 63,814 square meters, the college boasts a library with a collection of over 220,000 volumes and a variety of equipments valued altogether at 31.32 million yuan (US$3.91 million). Among the 231-strong teaching staff, 79 hold certificates of graduate studies or degrees of master or above, accounting for 34.2% of the total. By the end of 2005, the enrollment at the college had reached 5,700.
   The college consists of five departments, namely, Dept. of Automotive Engineering, Dept. of Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, Dept. of Management, Dept. of Computer Science & Information Engineering and Dept. of Industrial & Commercial Foreign Languages, with 33 specialty programs on offer, including Automotive Inspection & Maintenance Technology, Mechanical & Electrical Integration Technology, Heating, Ventilation & Air-conditioning Technology, Numerical Control Technology, Mould Design & Manufacturing, Applied Electronic Technology, Accounting Computerization, Logistics Management, Industrial & Commercial Enterprise Management, Mobile Telecommunication Technology, Tourism Management, Business English, Foreign Affairs Service English etc.
   In 2005, upon the approval from the Guangdong Provincial Education Department, the college initiated the cooperative Tourism Management Program with North Sydney Institute of Australia. Students of this program are to be conferred both Chinese College Diplomas and Australian TAFE Advanced Diplomas after completing all the required credits. In the same year, programs of two-year schooling, e.g., Numerical Control Technology, were launched. In 2006, besides regular high schools, the college started to enroll graduates from specialized secondary schools, skilled workers schools and vocational high schools, while the college-level adult programs were also launched.
   The college, in its long-term endeavor, has gradually developed a talent cultivation mode based on vocational competency and oriented to market and employment, which contributes to employment rates higher than 90% for five consecutive years. Moreover, the college ranks among the first batch of State-designated Competency-based Talents Training Institutions of two specialties, namely, “Numerical Control Technology Application” and “Automotive Operation & Maintenance”, and also the first batch of Guangdong Provincial Competency-based Advanced Talents Training Centers of “Air-conditioning Equipment Maintenance” and “Electrician Technology”. It also boasts one national-level college Excellent Course (“Numerical Control Processing Technology”) and three provincial-level college Excellent Courses.
   In 2005, a vocational skill appraisal institute was established under the jurisdiction of the college upon the approval from Guangdong Provincial Labor & Social Security Department. Six types of vocational skills subject to its appraisal, e.g., automotive maintenance,air-conditioning maintenance etc., fall into four levels, namely, junior technician, intermediate technician, senior technician and technical expert.
   The college has so far established 33 training bases, including Guangzhou Honda Automobile Co., Ltd, Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co., Ltd, E&U Information Control Technology Co., Ltd. Guangdong, Haier group, Guangdong Audio & Video Product Imp & Exp Service Center etc.
